Barnsley Tourist Information

This active post-industrial town in the heart of its borough provides visitors with a unique Yorkshire experience, combining a rich industrial heritage with a rural landscape, dotted with charming little villages and market towns.

Perhaps the most notable attraction in the area, Wentworth Castle and Gardens is one of the most important and historic gardens in the north of England, with 26 listed structures scattered across the only Grade I listed parkland. Recently re-opened to visitors, it offers open views of the landscape, pleasant woodland walks and towering follies that will please the whole family.

Other significant architectural attractions include Monk Bretton Priory, a 12th century priory in Lundwood, a five minute drive from Barnsley town centre. Also included is Cannon Hall Museum Park, a fine stately house designed by John Carr of York and surrounded by extensive historic parkland. Close to it is Cannon Hall Open Farm, a real working farm that will be a treat for the young ones as they discover the delights of feeding the animals and playing on the adjoining adventure playground. Worsbrough Mill Museum, a working water powered corn mill dating from 1625, is also a must-see, and interested visitors can take back stone ground flour produced by the mill, available to buy in the gift shop.

If fascinated by Barnsley’s industrial heritage, famous for its glass and coal production, the National Coal Mining Museum is only a short drive away, displaying a collection of more than 32,000 objects and detailing the history of life in mining communities. Elsecar Heritage Centre, within Barnsley borough, tells of the realities behind the colliery workshops, and provides a chance to travel on Elsecar’s very own steam railway.

Of course, when the children get tired of sightseeing and want a bit of light-hearted activity, Barnsley Metrodome, the region’s leading, state-of-the-art sport and leisure centre, is only a few minutes from the town centre, and there are plenty of high street chains and independent retailers in the central district that will cater to the whole family. Barnsley also has a bustling night life, with restaurants, bars and nightclubs to meet the needs of any traveller.

Interesting fact: Barnsley is mentioned in George Orwell’s novel, The Road to Wigan Pier.
