Beverley Tourist Information

Lying eight miles north-west from Hull is the delightful market town of Beverley, best known for the architectural splendour of its religious buildings. The town and its people exude a charm that could only stem from a lively community and shared pride, and was once identified as ‘the top place to live in Britain’ by a Royal Bank of Scotland study.

Most notable of its religious buildings is the famous Beverley Minster, one of the greatest gothic churches in the country and a significant landmark of the area. An important place of sanctuary and pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, the Minster remains a living parish church and enjoys visitations from people all around the world. St. Mary’s Church, a daughter church of the Minster, was built in the 1100s and boasts an impressive architecture of its own, with extensive stained glass windows and beautiful greenery surrounding it. Another equally eye-catching building is St. Nicholas Church, also once a daughter church of the Minster.

As a market town, one of its main features is undeniably the Saturday Market Place, located at the heart of the town centre. The Beverley Market Cross still overlooks the stalls, and wares traded include everything from fresh local produce to handmade jewellery. Being the natural epicentre of the town, the marketplace is surrounded by many shops, banks and pubs, conveniently placed for locals and tourists alike. The Wednesday Market Place is situated close by, selling similar goods in a smaller scale.

Beverley Racecourse, located in the common land of Westwood, is gradually becoming a greater site of interest for visitors, and is now regarded as a major event in the horse racing calendar. The surrounding pastureland provides a nice area for family picnics or kite-flying, and is a popular place for local families during the weekends. Other common pasturelands include Swinemoor and Figham Pasture, managed by an ancient line of Pasture Masters who are appointed guardians of these green areas.

Interesting fact: One of the most popular derivations of the town’s name is ‘Beoferlic’, an Anglo-Saxon word for “beaver clearing in the wood”, and its town crest depicts a beaver by the water.
