Badapple Theatre Company – Concerts On Your Doorstep

James Keelaghan

Those very nice people at the Badapple Theatre Company are producing a series of “Concerts on your Doorstep”, bringing music to the places that other promoters rarely reach.

The series kicks off in Green Hammerton on Sunday 6 November with Canadian singer-songwriter James Keelaghan. He may not be well known in the UK (yet) but back home he has built up a substantial following with his songs about Canada and has won the country’s prestigious Juno Award (the equivalent of a Grammy) and has had a further four nominations. Other Juno recipients include Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Alanis Morissette, Justin Bieber, k.d. lang, Arcade Fire, and Joni Mitchell, so you can see that he’s in very good company.

James’ voice is described as a tuneful and lilting baritone, and he accompanies himself with laid-back guitar. Between songs he’ll recount some of his amazing stories about his time on the road and the people he met whilst gigging around the world.

The award-winning music critic Dave Marsh described James Keelaghan as “Canada’s finest songwriter”. That’s high praise indeed when you look at the wealth of songwriting talent that Canada has produced over the years.

James has only got a handful of gigs in this country (others include Edinburgh, Birmingham, Sheffield and Coventry) so grab this one chance to see him in North Yorkshire if you can.

Tickets: adults £8.50, child £5

James is also appearing at the Beehive Folk Club in Sheffield at 8.00 pm on 4 November 2011:

Badapple Theatre Company Presents: A Yorkshire Christmas Carol

What do you get when you relocate one of the nation’s favourite Christmas stories to a wintry setting on a farm in the wilds of Yorkshire in the 1950s? Why, a Yorkshire Christmas Carol, of course, with Scrooge (who was clearly modelled by Dickens on a typical Yorkshireman, hand clasped firmly on his wallet) as the farmer with lots of skeletons in his closet – some of whom come back to haunt him as ghosts.

But this production is far from doom and gloom, as it’s full of good humour and jollity, carols and songs, plus an extra added touch of magic and invention through the use of puppets. In fact it’s an excellent way for all the family to get into the Christmas spirit of bonhomie and goodwill to everyone.

The Badapple Theatre Company first produced A Yorkshire Christmas Carol last year and it was so well received that they just had to bring it back this year.

A Yorkshire Christmas Carol was written and is produced and directed by Kate Bramley (formerly of Hull Truck Theatre) who has just had another astounding run with Back to the Land Girls (see our review here).

Rob Angell plays Scrooge (and other parts) and he’s worked with Kate before at Hull Truck. He recently appeared in TV’s Waterloo Road, and was touring with Hull Truck earlier in the year in their production of John Godber’s April in Paris (next to Wendi Peters – Coronation Street and Loose Women).

Christopher Jordan, photo courtesy of Bad Apple Theatre Company

Christopher Jordan (who plays Cratchitt, et al) is a stand-up comedian and actor with many stage appearances, including York’s Theatre Royal. He took eight different roles in a recent touring production in the Dales for the Blaize Theatre Company.

Acclaimed musician Jez Lowe has written a Christmas cracker full of new songs for the show. The puppets were made by the multi-talented Samantha Edwards (she played one of the lead roles in the two-hander Land Girls).

This production is supported by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

A Yorkshire Christmas Carol starts on 1 December in Long Marston and will play at venues across Yorkshire – for a full breakdown of pantos and Christmas productions across the county including all of A Yorkshire Christmas Carol’s dates, please see here:

12 October: The New Wensleydale Railway, a talk by Ruth Annison

The Wensleydale Railway is a short line in North Yorkshire which runs through 16 miles of amazing Yorkshire Dales countryside between Leeming Bar and Redmire, via Bedale and Leyburn. Until the 1950s it was part of the main rail network and linked Northallerton on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and Garsdale on the Settle-Carlisle line. The Wensleydale Railway Association was set up in1990 to restore the original link from the ECML to the west of the county. Although freight traffic can still link up with the ECML, there is no direct link into Northallerton Station for passengers, but plans are underway to restore the link and to extend the line, in stages, on the west side so that eventually passengers will be able to travel by train all the way to Garsdale where it would link up with the Settle-Carlisle Railway. At present there are bus links at either end of the Wensleydale Railway for passengers to meet their connections.

This talk tells about this important lifeline for Dales’ residents and visitors: the campaign to reopen the line, how it’s run on a day-to-day basis, and what the railway’s plans for the future are. The presenter, Ruth Annison, hails from Hawes and was one of those instrumental in saving the Settle-Carlisle Railway when it was under threat in the 1980s. Once that was reprieved Ruth turned her attention into the re-opening of the Wensleydale Railway.

The talk takes place at The Galtres Centre, Easingwold on 12 October 2011 at 7.30pm.

Tickets: Adults £6.50, 16 & under £4

Box office: Monday – Friday 9.00 am – 5.00 pm, tel: 01347 822 472

The beautiful village of Marsden “oozing jazz from every nook and cranny” is celebrating a special milestone this October as its increasingly popular Jazz Festival reaches its 20th year.

And what a celebration it promises to be. There are more than 75 scheduled events during the 48 hours, with all-star concerts opening and closing the Festival.

Highlights include Liane Carroll (pictured), Kenny Ball, The Submotion Orchestra, Asaf Sirkis Trio, Soweto Kinch, Trio VD and of course the festival’s flagship New Stream (this year’s line up includes World Service Project, Olivia Moore and Stuart McCallum.

The Festival are commissioning two new pieces this year (from Richard Ormrod and Ben Crosland) following the success of the highly acclaimed Tommy Evans’ festival commission for 2010, the Green Seagull.

And there will be lots of opportunities for festival goers to get involved, whatever your level (musician or toddler!), whilst there will also be plenty of free concerts (around 3/4 of the gigs are free) including cutting edge contemporary, old school traditional and experimental jazz, presenting visitors with an abundance of choice and great quality. So good in fact, the Festival was named the Festival of the Year last year by Jazz Yorkshire.
