April-May 2011: The James Herriot Story 2011

From April 2011, the Badapple Theatre Co Ltd will be touring their production of “The James Herriot Story 2011”.

This comic-drama is a revised version of the biography of Alf Wight, “An Honorary Yorkshireman”, after he came to Yorkshire from Glasgow after the war and became a vet in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Alf Wight is better known as the author James Herriot whose stories were best-sellers and were adapted into the long-running TV series “All Creatures Great & Small”, starring Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy, Peter Davison and Lynda Bellingham, and two films, “It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet” with John Alderton and Colin Blakely and “All Creatures Great and Small” – the latter starring Simon Ward and Anthony Hopkins.

The James Herriot Story 2011 is set in a pub in Yorkshire in the 1940s – in the heyday of traditional farming, and includes a variety of the characters drawn from his novels and short stories with Jonny McPherson as the title character. The show remembers one of Yorkshire’s and also the rest of Britain’s, popular best-selling authors in a wryly humorous way.

Coincidentally (or maybe not),  BBC 1 will be screening a new 3-part drama series this year called “Young James” about James Herriot’s life in Scotland and the events which occurred which led to him deciding on a career as a vet. Each episode will last an hour and is based on Herriot’s notes of his own student days, and also Jim Wight’s autobiography of his father. 21-22 May: Malton Food Lovers Festival

The patrons of this year’s Malton Food Lovers Festival have been announced. They are:

Tom Parker Bowles – food writer and TV presenter of Market Kitchen on the Good Food Channel

Brian Turner – celebrity TV chef

Andrew Pern – writer and chef/patron of the Star Inn at Harome

Rosemary Shrager – popular TV chef

The hugely popular festival will be a two-day event this year with 10,000 visitors expected.

Approximately 100 local food and drink producers will be exhibiting at the Festival, and there will be an exclusive opportunity to watch surprise celebrities, alongside the region’s most admired chefs, create regional and international dishes in a series of cookery demonstrations and tutored tastings on two separate cookery stages. They will inspire visitors to enjoy and cook with the finest produce from Yorkshire and beyond.

Alongside the Food Festival, The Beer and Wine Festival will include 40 casks of real ale and ciders, a separate wine bar, tutored tastings, music and an all-day “beer garden” area.

Family events include a special Malton Food Lovers Taste Trail, a Young Chefs’ Competition, an Army Kitchen, Street Food Stalls, a Grand Prize Draw, music and entertainment throughout the two days and much more besides.

16 July-1 August: Ryedale Festival 2010

The Ryedale Festival is a musical and artistic jewel which began, under very modest circumstances, as the Helmsley Festival in 1981. In the intervening 29 years it has expanded geographically to other venues in Ryedale District and musically with a wide range of artists performing a rich tapestry of pieces – mainly classical but with a smattering of folk and other genres.

The Artistic Director of the Festival is the pianist and accompanist Christopher Glynn , who directed two series of McCann Concerts at the National Portrait Gallery in London and a festival to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten at the Royal Academy of Music.

This year’s Ryedale Festival has some stunning performers including Dame Felicity Lott, the Fitzwilliam Quartet and the Northern Sinfonia.

The Bradford International Film Festival is really making a name for itself on the international stage, and rightfully so; movies have been shown in Bradford for over a century!

This year, the 16th Bradford International Film Festival will continue to further Bradford’s reputation as the home of unique and ground-breaking cinema. The festival has attracted some big name special guests, including Fernando Meirelles, director of the Academy Award nominated City of God, who will be giving a talk prior to a screening of the film; revered British Actor, John Hurt, who’s career spans six decades and includes roles in such films as 10 Rillington Place, Midnight Express, Alien, The Field, and more recently, the Harry Potter movies. John’s talk will be followed by a screening of the 1980 film, The Elephant Man; considered by many to be his finest work. English cinematographer and film director, Nicolas Roeg will also be discussing his origins in the business before a screening of his 2007 supernatural drama, Puffball, and actress of theatre and film, Imelda Staunton will be looking back on her stage and screen career prior to a screening of the 2004 film, Vera Drake, for which she won numerous awards.

Enjoy a plethora of cinematic delights from around the globe, including previews and premieres from highly acclaimed directors, as well as remastered classics. Film fans will delight in the latest releases from the likes of Jacques Rivette, Tom DiCillo, Werner Herzog, Manuel Olivera, Todd Solondz and Chris Morris.

The 11 day event will be hosted at the National Media Museum in Bradford, as well as a number of other locations in the city and across Yorkshire, including Bradford Cineworld, Bradford Playhouse, Saltaire Victoria Hall, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Ilkley Playhouse, Leeds Trinity University College, Hyde Park Picture House, Otley Courthouse and Pocklington Arts Centre.
