The route for the 2012 London Olympic torch has been announced.

Arriving from Greece on 18 May, the torch’s relay starts in Land’s End on Saturday, 19 May and will snake its way around the United Kingdom for the next 70 days, taking in 1018 places before making one final journey from Hampton Court Palace down the River Thames to the Olympic Stadium in time for the Opening Ceremony.

Organisers say the torch will come within 10 miles of 95% of the population, and travel approximately 8000 miles. And as you’d expect, Yorkshire gets its fair share of exposure as the torch visits every corner of our great county.

Part of the journey through Yorkshire will be on the Flying Scotsman as the torch travels from York to Thirsk, and the torch will also pass great Yorkshire landmarks such as York Minster, the Humber Bridge and Harewood House. Major celebrations are being planned in Leeds, Sheffield and York, whilst Hull will be hosting a festival of music and sport.

There’ll also be a Winter Food & Drink Market, the Christmas Art Market, traditional funfair, ice skating, and live performances and installations in various venues throughout the town centre.

The Bradford International Film Festival is really making a name for itself on the international stage, and rightfully so; movies have been shown in Bradford for over a century!

This year, the 16th Bradford International Film Festival will continue to further Bradford’s reputation as the home of unique and ground-breaking cinema. The festival has attracted some big name special guests, including Fernando Meirelles, director of the Academy Award nominated City of God, who will be giving a talk prior to a screening of the film; revered British Actor, John Hurt, who’s career spans six decades and includes roles in such films as 10 Rillington Place, Midnight Express, Alien, The Field, and more recently, the Harry Potter movies. John’s talk will be followed by a screening of the 1980 film, The Elephant Man; considered by many to be his finest work. English cinematographer and film director, Nicolas Roeg will also be discussing his origins in the business before a screening of his 2007 supernatural drama, Puffball, and actress of theatre and film, Imelda Staunton will be looking back on her stage and screen career prior to a screening of the 2004 film, Vera Drake, for which she won numerous awards.

Enjoy a plethora of cinematic delights from around the globe, including previews and premieres from highly acclaimed directors, as well as remastered classics. Film fans will delight in the latest releases from the likes of Jacques Rivette, Tom DiCillo, Werner Herzog, Manuel Olivera, Todd Solondz and Chris Morris.

The 11 day event will be hosted at the National Media Museum in Bradford, as well as a number of other locations in the city and across Yorkshire, including Bradford Cineworld, Bradford Playhouse, Saltaire Victoria Hall, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Ilkley Playhouse, Leeds Trinity University College, Hyde Park Picture House, Otley Courthouse and Pocklington Arts Centre.
