The beautiful village of Marsden “oozing jazz from every nook and cranny” is celebrating a special milestone this October as its increasingly popular Jazz Festival reaches its 20th year.

Worldservice Project - photograph courtesy of the Marsden Jazz Festival

And what a celebration it promises to be. There are more than 75 scheduled events during the 48 hours, with all-star concerts opening and closing the Festival.

Liane Carroll - photograph courtesy of the Marsden Jazz Festival

Highlights include Liane Carroll (pictured), Kenny Ball, The Submotion Orchestra, Asaf Sirkis Trio, Soweto Kinch, Trio VD and of course the festival’s flagship New Stream (this year’s line up includes World Service Project, Olivia Moore and Stuart McCallum.

The Festival are commissioning two new pieces this year (from Richard Ormrod and Ben Crosland) following the success of the highly acclaimed Tommy Evans’ festival commission for 2010, the Green Seagull.

Soweto Kinch - photograph courtesy of the Marsden Jazz Festival

And there will be lots of opportunities for festival goers to get involved, whatever your level (musician or toddler!), whilst there will also be plenty of free concerts (around 3/4 of the gigs are free) including cutting edge contemporary, old school traditional and experimental jazz, presenting visitors with an abundance of choice and great quality. So good in fact, the Festival was named the Festival of the Year last year by Jazz Yorkshire.

16-27 March: Terry Gilliam to be honoured at Bradford International Film Festival

Monday, March 14th, 2011 by RichFox
17th Bradford International Film Festival

17th Bradford International Film Festival

The Bradford International Film Festival has made a real name for itself on the international stage as it showcases new, ground-breaking, obscure and unusual films.

This year sees the filmmaker Terry Gilliam presented with the 2011 Fellowship Award. In a special Screentalk interview shown prior to a screening of the 1981 film Time Bandits (starring John Cleese and Sean Connery), Gilliam will discuss his rise from Monty Python animation to one of the leading fantasy cinema figures in the world.

Other Gilliam films to be shown at the festival include Feat and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys and The Brothers Grimm.

Now in its 17th year, the Bradford International Film Festival will continue to extend Bradford’s growing reputation as the home of ground-breaking cinema. The Opening Night Gala will feature Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger starring Anthony Hopkins, whilst other highlights during the 11-day festival include Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins, Yoav Factor’s Reuniting the Rubins, plus a live satellite link up with Werner Herzog and a 3D screening of Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

Another special guest at this year’s Film Festival will be Claire Bloom as part of an 80th birthday tribute as she accepts the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award in a Screentalk following a screening of Robert Wise’s 1963 psychological horror film The Haunting. Other Bloom films to screen during the Festival include Look Back in Anger, Richard III and Limelight.

The Widescreen Weekend is a part of the Festival you won’t want to miss, with The Bridge on the River Kwai being shown in a newly restored 4k digital cinema print – the film will be shown in an aspect ratio of 2:55.1, the first ever screening in this way. Other films featured during the Widescreen Weekend include two other David Lean films – Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, plus a 3-strip Cinerama print of How the West Was Won.

More information can be found here, whilst if you’re looking to head to Bradford for the event, find accommodation in Bradford on Hello Yorkshire.

Skipton’s Yuletide Festival & Christmas Market 2010

Skipton – “Gateway to the Dales” – is holding Yuletide Festivals and Markets on the first two Sundays of December down the full length of its remarkable High Street (named as Britain’s Best Street in the UK in 2009).

And it won’t just be stalls and the rightly renowned range of independent shops that makes these two of the premier events in Yorkshire – it will also be the excellent entertainment from the likes of the Tap Dancing Turkeys, Bjorn the Polar Bear, Winter Rose – the old lady puppet, Musical Ruth and her piano, Break Dancing Santas, and Mr Scratchit and Mr Scrooge. And music will be provided by the Skipton Brass Band, the Accrington Pipe Band and the Barnoldswick Brass Band.

Shopping in Skipton is a marvellous experience at any time of year, but at Christmas it’s really special. There are many famous brand names and two department stores, and plenty of cafés and restaurants to rest weary legs when it’s time for a break.

As well as the Market in the High Street, there’ll be plenty of other Christmas entertainment in other locations throughout the town, and on both days of the Festival, the celebrations will finish with a procession from the High Street to Holy Trinity Church at 4 pm for a traditional service of carols in the grounds.

Together with the market there will be a full range of entertainment in the Town Centre throughout the day, both in the main High Street Arena and at locations across the Town. The whole of Skipton truly has a real Christmassy feel…

Each day of the Festival rounds off with a procession up the High Street to Holy Trinity Church (starting at 4pm) where a traditional Christmas carol service takes place in the grounds,

In the Guildhall, one of York’s finest medieval buildings, you’ll find local artists and craftspeople – a “Made in Yorkshire” special display. The Barley Hall also dates back to the middle ages and this former town house will host a special medieval market with craftspeople and traders in appropriate costumes (look out for the mulled wine – as popular in days of yore as it is now). There’s also an arts and crafts market in St William’s College where you’ll find fine, hand-crafted products not found in shops.

To complete the festive atmosphere, carol singers and buskers will be present in abundance, and there’s something for everyone. (Hint, to avoid the crowds, visit on the Thursday or Friday.)
