The Olympic Torch will visit numerous Yorkshire towns & cities

The route for the 2012 London Olympic torch has been announced.

Arriving from Greece on 18 May, the torch’s relay starts in Land’s End on Saturday, 19 May and will snake its way around the United Kingdom for the next 70 days, taking in 1018 places before making one final journey from Hampton Court Palace down the River Thames to the Olympic Stadium in time for the Opening Ceremony.

Organisers say the torch will come within 10 miles of 95% of the population, and travel approximately 8000 miles. And as you’d expect, Yorkshire gets its fair share of exposure as the torch visits every corner of our great county.

12-14 October: Pickering War Weekend 2012

The War Weekend in the North York Moors, Pickering, Levisham, Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby has been scheduled for 12, 13 and 14 October 2012.

An exceptionally popular event, 2012 will be the 20th year for the North York Moors Railway’s Wartime Weekend as visitors take a nostalgic trip back to 1940s wartime Britain.

Vintage Car Parade, Pickering

Vintage Car Parade, Pickering

Events will include:

  • a flag-raising ceremony to get proceedings under way, commemorating the many who died in service on the railways during the war
  • huge parade on the Saturday morning in the market place in Pickering
  • air raid at Pickering Station
  • 1940s musical shows and music
  • land army vintage tractor display
  • jive music and dancing
  • home front displays
  • French café in Le Visham (German-occupied Levisham)
  • Home Guard display, Anderson shelter display
Commemorating those who served on the Home Front

Commemorating those who served on the Home Front

The 2011 War Weekend drew record crowds to the North York Moors including hundreds of re-enactors from all over the UK and Europe (we spoke to a Polish chap from Stratford and a German re-enactor who’d come over from Düsseldorf for the weekend). And whilst Grosmont, Goathland and Pickering all put on brilliant shows and events, Levisham stole the show this year, tranformed into French Le Visham, a continental rural station under German occupation with a fabulous French café in an atmospheric marquee and a full-size replica flying V1 bomb.

For the 2012 War Weekend, if you’re looking for accommodation for the weekend, check out Pickering B&Bs, Whitby hotels and holiday cottages in the North York Moors on Hello Yorkshire.

In the meantime, here are a few pictures of the 2011 weekend to whet your appetite:

Back to the Land Girls (The Land Girls of Yorkshire) returns by popular demand

Badapple Theatre Company, based in Green Hammerton, North Yorkshire, put on a highly acclaimed touring production in 2010 about Yorkshire’s Land Girls – some of the largely unsung army of women who helped feed the people of Britain during the Second World War. There’s now a chance to catch it if you missed it first time round, or want to see it again, as it’s coming back on tour throughout September and October, starting at Marton cum Grafton Village Hall on 15 September.

UPDATE: 16 September 2011 – read our review and see pics of last night’s performance at Marton cum Grafton here

It tells the humorous story of two young women who volunteer for the Women’s Land Army in 1942. Buff is a townie and knows nothing about farming – she has a dream of being the next Vera Lynn. Her fellow volunteer Biddy is a country lass – but a hopeless romantic. The two of them cause a bit of a stir in the village they end up in – and become the focus of attention, much of it romantic. Neither are exactly cut out for farming. It’s tale of back-ache, blisters and banter – as they girls have to quickly learn how to get the most from the land.

The play was written and is directed by Kate Bramley (who was in the renowned Hull Truck Theatre Company), and although the play is a work of fiction it is based on reminiscences of real Land Army women – many of whom were only too pleased to get the opportunity to share their experiences. The show features some of the music from the era, as well as new tunes penned by Jez Lowe – a winner of a prestigious Radio 2 Sony Academy Award.

This will be the fourth and final tour of this highly successful and very funny musical drama – previous tours have been sell-outs, so book your tickets soon as this will be the last chance to see this marvellous two-hander. It’s suitable for all the family, though it’s probably more appropriate for kids of 10 and over.

This production is supported by a grant from Lottery Awards For All.

Fabulous 40s vehicles parade through Whitby

This year’s Spirit of the 40s Weekend in Whitby is brought to you by Dark Daisy Promotions who have taken over the reins of this well-established and highly successful event from the Whitby & District Tourism Association.

A wonderful event, where the whole town of Whitby gets involved in recreating the exciting community-driven “Spirit of the 40s”.

You’ll see shop window displays, traders in ‘The Bunker’, dances, enjoy 40s inspired food and drink in The Pavilion, some superb period cars and other vehicles (why not take a ride through the town on the steam bus?), plus terrific 40s fashion, finery and costume, combined with a 40s cinema experience – a true weekend to remember.
