Thursday, April 4th, 2013 by Alan PrattNov 30: Kirstie’s Handmade Britain in the Yorkshire Dales
Monday, November 28th, 2011 by chrisjonesNidderdale takes its name from the River Nidd which runs through this Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It hosts an agricultural show each September in Pateley Bridge, a small town between Harrogate and Grassington and only four miles from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
At this year’s Nidderdale Show, Kirstie Allsopp came along for an episode of her popular Channel 4 TV series Kirstie’s Handmade Britain. But she didn’t just take a look and leave – she got stuck in and made a Yorkshire pork pie and her own sausages. She also learnt the ins and outs of making brawn – a traditional dish made from pig’s heads, and sometimes known as pork cheese (Yorkshire folk don’t like to let anything go to waste, you know). Lots of preparation goes into putting on an agricultural show and Kirstie did her homework beforehand too – with local experts explaining how to make successful entries for the produce competitions at the Show.
The Nidderdale Show is said to be one of the country’s last proper agricultural shows and features one of the best exhibitions of animals in the UK – with first rate horse, livestock and dog sections.
Kirstie was fascinated by the Pig Section – and was given lots of background by Sarah Whitley, a young farmer from Nidderdale. Sarah is only 14 but has already clocked up years of expertise, having been born and bred on a local dairy, pig, and sheep farm. And Sarah’s got the awards to prove it. For the fourth year on the trot (so to speak) she made a clean sweep in the Pig Section awards, picking up Best in Show, Best Local Pig and Most Points in Show. Sarah has also won awards at three other major British Agricultural Shows.
Kirstie also took part in the All-Terrain-Vehicle challenge – still wearing a dress, she gamely put on a crash helmet and jumped on to a quad bike and finished the course in a very creditable time – and got a massive round of applause for doing so.
Kirstie later said that she’d had “an absolutely brilliant time” at the Nidderdale Show. “Everyone was so friendly & kind, perhaps the most beautiful showground we’ve visited”.
You can find out how Kirstie got on at the Nidderdale Show at 8.00 pm on Wednesday 30 November when Channel 4 screen this episode of Kirstie’s Handmade Britain.

2 April: Put the 'sing' back into Grassington
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 by RichFoxThere’s long been a tradition of making music in Upper Wharfedale, but in recent years the Dale has been noticeably silent. Grassington’s voluntary organisation, Grassington Hub, aims to change all that when they host an evening of traditional music, with the hope that it will become a regular event, encouraging local musicians to sing and play.
And there’s an impressive line-up to start things off with a bang.
Damien Barber and Mike Wilson top the bill, fresh from their recent nomination for Best Folk Duo in BBC Radio 2′s 2010 Folk Awards. Enjoying a strong local following, Damien’s band The Demon Barbers were one of the highlights of the 2009 Grassington Festival.
Local musicians and singers will also feature, and the evening will also reunite some of the professional musicians who are currently appearing as contestants in Channel 4′s Love Thy Neighbour.
Andrew Jackson, one of the Music Night’s organisers, said: “Making music has always been a part of what makes us human. With the current wash of recorded music this has been neglected over recent years, but there’s a backlash happening, as people rediscover the great reward in making their own music and getting together to make it into a social event. We hope this will mark the beginning of a regular get-together in Grassington.”
Grassington Hub co-ordinates the diversity of community and social organisations in the village, and its office houses a library, box office and tourist information service. The Music Night event is one of a number of fundraising activities which will help to support the Hub’s work.
If you’re keen to perform, please get in touch with the Hub on 01756 752 222.
Where: Grassington Town Hall
When: Saturday 2 April, 7:30pm
Tickets: £8
Refreshments and snacks available
Tickets can be purchased from the Grassington Hub or on the door, and you can find a raft of superb Grassington accommodation on Hello Yorkshire.

21-23 October: Grassington Players stage Oscar Wilde play
Sunday, September 12th, 2010 by adminGrassington Players will be staging as their autumn production Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, from a short story by Oscar Wilde originally published in 1897 and adapted for the stage by Constance Cox. Satirising upper class morality this is an entertaining black comedy. Lord Arthur learns from a palmist that he is destined to commit a murder, and worried that this should not affect his forthcoming marriage, sets about a series of unsuccessful attempts to murder a much loved aunt.
The performance will take place in the Town Hall at Grassington, and tickets are £7 for adults, £4 for children.

22-24 April: Follow the Fleece (Grassington Players)
Thursday, April 1st, 2010 by adminOriginally written for the Yorkshire folk choir Baccapella, Follow the Fleece tells the story of Dales sheep farming and how Bradford became world famous in the woollen industry. From mediaeval times through the industrial revolution to present day, with historical characters from Shakespeare to Titus Salt, the tale is told through song and narrative.
Featuring some familiar songs alongside original material, the flavour of Follow the Fleece is folk music – ‘of the people’ – from Greensleeves to Springsteen.
