A fabulous experience throughout the year, shopping in Skipton is particularly special at Christmas. There are two department stores and many famous brand names, plus an abundance of restaurants and cafés to rest those weary legs when it’s time to take a break.

In addition to the Market in the High Street, there will be lots of other Christmas entertainment in various locations throughout the Skipton, and the celebrations will end at 4pm with a procession from the High Street to Holy Trinity Church on both days of the Festival for a traditional carol service in the grounds.

Richmond’s Walking & Book Festival is a fabulous 10 days of walking and varied entertainment based in the wonderful Georgian Market Town on the River Swale in North Yorkshire.

A favourite stop-off point in lower Swaledale on Wainwright’s 192-mile coast-to-coast walk, Richmond is a wonderfully romantic town with its Norman castle overlooking the River Swale and its large cobbled marketplace.

The festival starts on Friday 23 September with a Ghost Walk around the town with Rhoda Fraser. For the next 10 days, there’s something for every taste taking in magnificent scenery and ranging from:

    • guided walks of Wensleydale and Swaledale
    • tours of the historic town including the Castle and Georgian Theatre
    • a beautiful walk alongside the Wensleydale Railway
    • Herriot Country Ramble – taking in Arkengarthdale, one of the settings of All Creatures Great and Small
    • the Wensleydale Chain – a series of circular walks commencing at Hawes and leading through the Dale
    • a walk exploring J M Turner’s links with Richmond
Richmond Castle - photo courtesy of Alan Pratt

And when the walking’s over for the day, there’s a great range of entertainment available throughout the Festival including music, slide shows, chamber orchestras, exhibitions, a folk night, talks, films and céilidhs.

The Book Festival features authors and writers, performers and poets, including the ever-popular Pam Ayres, and you can also enjoy wine and beer tastings, and sample a wide variety of excellent local produce including cheese, ice cream, breads, ales, plus Richmond has a great selection of restaurants and cafés.

So if you’ve a love of walking, great entertainment, literature, food and drink, this Festival will be right up your street.

For the full Festival programme, please visit the Books & Boots website here.

Back to the Land Girls (The Land Girls of Yorkshire) returns by popular demand

Badapple Theatre Company, based in Green Hammerton, North Yorkshire, put on a highly acclaimed touring production in 2010 about Yorkshire’s Land Girls – some of the largely unsung army of women who helped feed the people of Britain during the Second World War. There’s now a chance to catch it if you missed it first time round, or want to see it again, as it’s coming back on tour throughout September and October, starting at Marton cum Grafton Village Hall on 15 September.

UPDATE: 16 September 2011 – read our review and see pics of last night’s performance at Marton cum Grafton here

It tells the humorous story of two young women who volunteer for the Women’s Land Army in 1942. Buff is a townie and knows nothing about farming – she has a dream of being the next Vera Lynn. Her fellow volunteer Biddy is a country lass – but a hopeless romantic. The two of them cause a bit of a stir in the village they end up in – and become the focus of attention, much of it romantic. Neither are exactly cut out for farming. It’s tale of back-ache, blisters and banter – as they girls have to quickly learn how to get the most from the land.

Land girl in uniform - photo courtesy of the Badapple Theatre Company

Land girl in uniform - photograph courtesy of the Badapple Theatre Company

The play was written and is directed by Kate Bramley (who was in the renowned Hull Truck Theatre Company), and although the play is a work of fiction it is based on reminiscences of real Land Army women – many of whom were only too pleased to get the opportunity to share their experiences. The show features some of the music from the era, as well as new tunes penned by Jez Lowe – a winner of a prestigious Radio 2 Sony Academy Award.

This will be the fourth and final tour of this highly successful and very funny musical drama – previous tours have been sell-outs, so book your tickets soon as this will be the last chance to see this marvellous two-hander. It’s suitable for all the family, though it’s probably more appropriate for kids of 10 and over.

This production is supported by a grant from Lottery Awards For All.

    UPDATE – 14 JULY 2011:

Great news for everyone who loved the first series of ITV’s The Dales – a second series has been commissioned and will be broadcast in 2012!

Buy the DVD of The Dales starring Adrian Edmondson

Now available – DVD of The Dales

And if you loved the current series or know of someone who did, you can buy the DVD from Amazon by clicking on the image to the left.

Original post about launch of the The Dales programme posted on 24 March 2011:

The Yorkshire Dales is the fabulous backdrop to a new 12-part fly-on-the-wall series featuring Adrian Edmondson.

Returning to the county of his birth, Adrian will be bringing us the captivating stories of a summer in the life of the Yorkshire Dales.

And whilst the Dales are jaw-droppingly beautiful, they also present a challenging environment for the residents of some of its most remote villages. Throughout the series, Adrian meets a variety of characters who live and work in the Dales, including in the first episode, 16 year-old Philip Mellin who, having lost his father last year, has just left school to take over the running of the family farm alongside his mother Carol.

Later in the programme, we meet shepherdess Amanda Owen on a remote sheep farm to see how she balances running the farm (complete with 900 sheep) with husband Clive, whilst bringing up five young children (the youngest of whom is just 4 weeks old).

Through the eyes of the people who live there, The Dales provides a fascinating insight into one of the UK’s most iconic locations – later programmes in the series will feature the Wensleydale Railway, the Great Yorkshire Show, Bolton Castle, a real life ‘Vicar of Dibley’, plus the tale of how a village of 200 residents managed to find 170 investors to help to save their village pub.

You can catch the show on Monday evenings starting 28 March from 8:00-8:30pm on ITV1.

21 October-8 January 2011: Magical Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park

Forget Lapland this year, there’s a fabulous Christmas adventure awaiting you in the heart of North Yorkshire at Stockeld Park near Wetherby, York, Harrogate and Leeds.

The Christmas Adventure really is a magical and mystical Christmas extravaganza (and I should know, having visited twice in the last two years with my 3 boys under 10 and some of their pals).

There’s so much to take in and enjoy, it’s hard to know where to begin. Our kids loved the Enchanted Forest, a wonderful fantasy trail through woodland and around a lake lit up at night by some spectacular and imaginative lighting effects. There are magical characters and a host of animals and birds along the trail, including a 20ft high troll, Russell the Talking Tree, and illuminated flamingos, unicorns, geese, deer and angels. There’s plenty of interactive wizardry for children to marvel at too, such as the large-scale woodland instruments you’ll find deep in the forest.

Nordic Skiing in the Enchanted Forest

Nordic Skiing in the Enchanted Forest

And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can ski the woodland trail on Nordic skis…!

Once we’d finished our skiing, we decided to head for the skating rink (well, some of us did – a few of the adults decided to stay warm and cosy with a mug of hot cocoa in the Woodland Café, which overlooks the eco-friendly rink). We had an hour on our hired skates, which is more than enough time to get the hang of it and build up some confidence and speed!

    Stockeld Park's eco-friendly skating rink

    Stockeld Park's eco-friendly skating rink

After skiing and skating, there’s a great selection of food on offer at the Woodland Café, including hot meals, tempting cakes and a glass of red wine or a pint of Christmas real ale. And once we’d recharged our batteries, we headed to the stunning Christmas maze, an illuminated labyrinth of over a mile of paths in the shape of a snowflake. There are 12 gates throughout the maze, each depicting one of the 12 days of Christmas.

    The amazing snowflake maze

    The amazing snowflake maze

And that’s not the end of the magic at the Christmas Adventure – there’s also a chance to visit Father Christmas himself in Santa’s Grotto, there’s a 50ft high big wheel, and a well-stocked Christmas shop selling some delightful Christmas decorations, ornaments, tree lights, baubels and gifts. You can even buy this year’s Christmas tree grown on the Stockeld estate.

A small section of the Christmas Shop

The Christmas Adventure is a fabulous experience and really gets you and the kids into the Christmas spirit. For lots more information including how to find Stockeld Park, check out the Christmas Adventure website here. And if you’re coming to visit from a distance, why not check into a York hotel, Harrogate hotel or perhaps a Yorkshire Dales guest house.
