Grassington Dickensian Festival

3rd, 10th, 17th December 2012 – all day

Grassington, North Yorkshire

Grassington Dickensian Christmas shop window

Grassington Dickensian Christmas shop window

Every December, Grassington travels back in time to the days of Charles Dickens to celebrate a Christmas, Victorian style. This year promisesto be an extra special occasion as it’s the bicentenary of the great author’s birth. The villagers and traders wear period costume, as do many of the town’s visitors, and shops are decorated in 19th century style to provide an atmospheric setting for the festive season. The streets come alive to the sound of Morris dancers, street performers, and musicians, and there are lots of stallholders selling gifts, decorations, food (traditional fare and up to the minute snacks). There’ll also be exhibitions of traditional local country crafts. And from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th December there’s an ice rink (open from 2 pm to 9 pm on the Friday, 11 am to 9 pm on the Saturday and 11 am to 6 pm on the Sunday) check for prices on the Grassington website.

Clayton

Clayton Dickensian Market

Saturday 1 December 2012 – 11am to 5.00pm

Clayton Lane, Clayton, Bradford BD14 6RE

Last year over 7,000 people visited the Clayton Dickensian Christmas Market and it’s become a highlight of the season for people from far and wide.

The market will be opened by players from the Bradford Bulls Rugby League team at 11.00 am and there’ll then be a parade leading up to the crowning of Clayton’s very own Snow Queen for this year.

Not only will it be great fun but it also helps a great cause – the Motor Neurone Disease charity MND, to which all this year’s profits will be donated.

There’ll be approximately 100 stalls with things to buy, food and drink to consume and prizes to win. The food and drink stalls will feature a barbecue and sell cakes, old-fashioned sweets, chestnuts, chutneys, crêpes, delicious mince pies and cakes and all washed down with coffee or mulled wine. There’ll also be an indoor refreshment tent and a bottle stall. Other stalls will have jewellery, toys, craft items and soaps to buy and, as you’d expect, tombolas with prizes to win.

To keep the kids’ smiling there’ll be a climbing wall, fairground rides, carnival games and a miniature pony and carriage. The Christmas lights will be turned on as it gets dark before the market closes at 5.00 pm.

Clayton Dickensian Christmas extends an invitation to everyone to join in the fun and wear Victorian costume, like many of the villagers and stallholders. Wrap up warm and experience a truly magnificent start to the festivities in Clayton village.
