Up to 30 August: Steam-Hauled Trains Wensleydale Railway

Sunday, June 20th, 2010 by admin

With so much to see and do throughout the Yorkshire Dales, the Wensleydale Railway is an outstanding day out for families, tourists and rail enthusiasts – great value and great fun.

The railway winds through 16 miles of James Herriot and JMW Turner country, taking in the best of the National Park with its terrific walking and cycling spots, Aysgarth Falls and the market towns of Leyburn and Bedale.

And from now until (and including) Monday 30 August (with the exception of 9, 10 and 11 August), the railway are running steam-hauled trains from Leeming Bar and Redmire. The steam locomotive is an ex-British Rail Standard Class locomotive (No. 80105), one of only 14 to have been preserved. Built in 1955 at Brighton Works, it was rescued from a scrapyard in Barry in the early 1970s, returning to service 10 years ago at Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway.

For further details, and a full timetable, check out the Wensleydale Railway here.

15-17 October 2010: Railway in Wartime weekend

Saturday, June 12th, 2010 by chrisjones

This is an incredibly popular event (and growing in popularity each year) organised primarily by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NMYR) and takes place in Pickering and the villages (Levisham, Goathland, and Grosmont) on the rail line to Whitby. Although originally based on the railway stations, it has, over the years, spread out across the towns and villages and involves a large proportion of the local population, as well as thousands of visitors (many in period costume) who come along to join in the many and varied events that take part over the weekend.

The basis of the Railway in Wartime Weekend is that Britain’s railways and the staff that ran them played a vital part in the Allied victory in World War 2. To celebrate this contribution to the war effort and to commemorate those staff who died in service the North Yorkshire Moors Railway set aside one weekend a year in which they turn the clock back to those days when fair Albion had its back again the wall. The NMYR decorates it stations in WW2 style, station names are covered up (spies are everywhere!) station windows are taped-up (to minimise flying glass), sandbags line entrances and exits (to absorb shrapnel), and propaganda posters adorn the walls (to boost morale and encourage everyone to do their duty). To complete the picture the Railway’s staff wear appropriate uniform for the duration.

Many of the local populace join in and also dress in period civvies or in the uniforms of our valiant armed forces, and there are dances (organised by ENSA*, naturally), parades and marches. Participants also have to be aware that air-raids can occur at any time and must be prepared to take precautions – so always wear your gas-mask!

If you visit any of the participating towns and villages, you’ll find lots of men and women in military uniforms – and you’ll need to be aware that you might be challenged by a German paratrooper (they have been known to invade Pickering before now). There are always displays of military equipment – from hand guns to tanks – flags, and insignia, etc.

And, of course, you can really get a feel for it all by boarding one of the steam trains that journey back and forth on the line that day.

The weekend serves many functions – it’s an excuse to dress up, it’s a chance to relive recent history (a time for grandparents to share their or their parents’ experiences of wartime Britain), it’s a commemoration (a wreath is laid in tribute to railway workers who died during wartime service, but it’s also huge fun and a treat for all the family.

*Not really, as ENSA – Entertainments National Service Association – no longer exists, but they are in the style of ENSA concerts and dances.

September: Scarborough Cricket Festival 2010

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 by chrisjones

The Scarborough Cricket Festival is held at the end of every season and is a series of matches featuring Yorkshire County Cricket Club and which takes place at the North Marine Road Cricket Ground.

The event has been held in Scarborough since 1876, so it has a long and august history with many of the world’s most famous cricketers taking part. Indeed, two of the greatest batsmen of all time scored double hundreds during the Festival. In 1925 Jack Hobbs achieved a score of 266 not out and Sir Len Hutton amassed 241 in 1953 – both as Players in Gentlemen versus Players matches. But they were both surpassed by the one-time Captain of New Zealand, Ken Rutherford, who managed an outstanding 317 for the NZ tourists against an XI led by former England Captain Brian Close in 1986. But great scores from batsmen are only half the story. The legendary Wilfred Rhodes took 9 wickets for just 24 runs against the Australians in 1899, Johnny Briggs also had the better of the Aussies in 1890 with a majestic 9 for 31, and in 1888 JM Preston took 9 for 23 for Yorkshire against the MCC.

The North Marine Road Cricket Ground has a capacity of 11,500 and has been used as cricket venue since 1863. Yorkshire CCC play many of their first class matches there.  The ground has an excellent pitch, a hard outfield and comparatively short boundaries and so spectators often witness some high-scoring matches.

The Festival attracts many holidaymakers, who can sit and enjoy some fine cricket in the mellow sunshine typical of an English September.

9-17 July: York Early Music Festival 2010

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 by chrisjones

The annual York Early Music Festival is a celebration of music from the 18th century and earlier – with concerts, recitals, workshops and lectures held in a number of venues in this historic city.

It first took place in 1977 and features mainly classical works – many of which are rarely performed these days.

This year’s theme is musical marriages, with pieces written for weddings – from intimate personal pieces to majestic ceremonial occasions – along with pieces chosen because they reflect a figurative marriage of musical styles.

The festival opens in York Minster with Monteverdi’s Vespers, written in 1610. Works by Robert Schumann (to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth), and those of a host of other composers, also feature in a very rich and interesting schedule.

Artists

This year’s solo artists include:
Barbara Schlick (soprano)
James Gilchrist (tenor)
Peter Seymour (accompanist)
Hopkinson Smith (lute)
Mahan Esfahani (harpsichord)

Ensembles include:
The Bach Players
La Capella Ducale
Ensemble Lucidarium
Fretwork.
London Baroque
Musica Fiata
The Sixteen
Theatre of the Ayre

Venues
Besides the Minster, the other venues for this year’s concerts are the National Centre for Early Music in Walmgate, the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall at the University of York, the C4C Chapel at York St John University, St George’s RC Church in Peel St, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in Fossgate, the Unitarian Chapel in St Saviourgate, All Saints Church in North St, Harewood House, Bedern Hall in St Andrewgate, St and Michael le Belfrey Church in High Petergate.

In previous years, the following people have performed at the festival:

Robin Blaze
The Ebor Singers
Ex Cathedra
I Fagiolini
Emma Kirkby
Giles Lewin
Josetxu Obregon
The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

11-18 July: York Mystery Plays 2010

Sunday, April 11th, 2010 by chrisjones

The York Mystery Plays date back to medieval times – their origins can be traced back to at least the middle of the 14th century. They were originally (and more properly) called the York Corpus Christi Plays as they were performed on the feast day of Corpus Christi – one of the Christian church’s movable feasts held between 23 May and 24 June.

There are 48 short plays in all and they tell the story of the Bible from Genesis to the Last Judgement and they are performed over a four-year cycle. The twelve plays this year will be performed in four different locations (or stations) on each of two days (11th & 18th July). This year’s production will, like the 2006 one, be performed on “pageant waggons”, complete with stage sets, which will move through the streets of York city centre from one station to the next.

These are the locations for the 2010 production:

11th July

  • Dean’s Park
  • College Green
  • St Sampson’s Square
  • Eye of York

18th July

  • Dean’s Park
  • College Green
  • St Sampson’s Square
  • Museum Gardens

Performances start at 12 noon and go on till around 6 pm with over 100 speaking parts, and instrumental and choral musical accompaniment.

There will be standing room at all the locations and seats will be available with a ticket at Dean’s Park and the Museum Gardens.

This year’s plays

Part One

  • Creation to the Fifth Day
  • The Expulsion of Adam and Eve
    with Cain and Abel
  • Abraham and Isaac
  • Joseph’s troubles about Mary
  • Massacre of the Innocents
  • The Transfiguration
  • The Agony in the Garden

Part Two

  • The Dream of Pilate’s Wife
  • The Merchants of the Staple
  • The Road to Calvary
  • The Crucifixion/Death of Christ
  • The Incredulity of Thomas
  • The Last Judgement

Part One will begin at noon in Dean’s Park. Part Two will begin at 2.30 in Dean’s Park.

Famous names and amateur actors

Numerous actors – mainly local amateurs – have appeared in the York Mystery Plays. Way before she became one of our most revered actors and was made a Dame, Judi Dench appeared in 1951 and 1954 as an angel and in 1957 as the Virgin Mary. Robson Green appeared in the Mystery Plays as Jesus in 1992.

There are several related events this summer:

York Art Gallery

3 April to 8 September – The Art of the Mystery Plays

An exhibition of paintings, drawings, sketches, documents and artefacts, and including the only surviving original manuscript of the plays (kindly loaned by the British Library) dating back to the 15th century. The exhibition continues unto 8 September but the manuscript is only on show until 5 August
