Vote for Whitby to be 5 Live's "City" of 2012

As the Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the UK will be getting a new city as part of the celebrations.

26 towns are competing to become a city, including Doncaster, Goole and Middlesbrough, and the winner will be announced in the next few weeks (a full list of the towns competing can be found here).

BBC 5 Live has decided to run its own competition, stating that size doesn’t matter. Running independently from the Queen’s competition, 5 Live have invited listeners to nominate the villages and towns that matter to them, and they have drawn up a shortlist which is as follows:

Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, City A

Bungay, Suffolk, City B

Whitby, North Yorkshire, City C

Naturally Hello Yorkshire is somewhat biased towards the wonderful seaside town of Whitby (CITY C), famed for being the inspiration for Dracula, for its links with Captain James Cook, Whitby jet and Easter Sunday, but you can vote for any of the shortlist by texting CITY A, CITY B or CITY C (Whitby!!) to 85058 from 6am on Tuesday 17 January 2012 to 8am on Friday 20 January 2012 (texts charged at standard message rates but  for a full list of terms and conditions, please see the BBC’s website here).

The winner will be announced on Friday, 20 January 2012 just before 9am and the Tony Livesey show will be presented from the victorious “city” to celebrate.

18 June 2012: Olympic Torch Gets Some Good Old Yorkshire Traction

As we mentioned in our recent blog the Olympic Torch will be visiting many cities, towns and villages in Yorkshire and the Humber on its passage around the UK which ends in London for the opening ceremony of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. During its journey the Torch will travel by various means of transport as well as being carried on foot. But Yorkshire has really struck lucky as two of the forms of locomotion will be locomotives – or rather on board trains being pulled by locomotives.

On Monday 18 June, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway will take the Olympic Flame from Whitby, one of Britain’s favourite seaside resorts, aboard one of its steam trains. The Flame will leave the North Yorkshire coast to travel through the beautiful countryside of the North York Moors to the historic market town of Pickering. It seems rather fitting that the Torch will be travelling through countryside very much associated with outdoor exercises such as walking, running, cycling and riding as part of its journey to the premier competition for all things athletic.

Philip Benham, the General Manager of The North Yorkshire Moors Railway said on hearing the news that the NYMR would be involved, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Railway to unite with the communities of North Yorkshire, in welcoming the Olympic Flame to our region and supporting those who have been chosen to run as Torchbearers. It is a great honour to have been selected as one of the host locations and we look forward to sharing the excitement of the Olympic spirit all the way along the line.”

And local councillors are delighted too. Cllr James Fraser, Member Champion for Sport for Ryedale District Council, said, “I am absolutely delighted that Ryedale residents will have the chance to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay.”

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games added: ‘We are thrilled to confirm that the North Yorkshire Moors Railway will act as a host location for the Olympic Flame, extending an invitation to the people in Yorkshire to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay during its journey around the UK. This is the UK’s moment to shine and I want to encourage people across Yorkshire to start planning how they can be part of this once in a lifetime opportunity and show their support for the inspirational Torchbearers chosen to carry the Olympic Flame as we count down to the start of the Olympic Games.’

The Olympic Flame will be carried from York to Thirsk on Wednesday 20 June 2012 by the majestic Flying Scotsman. This glorious engine was built in 1923, having been designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and in 1934, the Scotsman was the first locomotive to officially break the 100 mph barrier. It did its bit during the Second World War carrying passengers and troops the length of the country – though it had to forgo its Apple Green livery for the more austere black, but when the war ended it returned to its original colour. Later, after the railways were nationalised the Scotsman was briefly blue before again changing colour to Brunswick Green in which colour it remained until its retirement in 1963. After several changes of ownership involving a stay in the United States and Australia it was saved for the nation in 2004. It is currently being restored, and should be back in service in spring 2012. The Flying Scotsman has travelled approximately 2½ million miles and given useful service to millions of passengers in its lifetime and is now an object of pleasure for new generations.

The Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire and chair of Yorkshire Gold, Gary Verity, said: “We are delighted that the Torch will visit two of Yorkshire’s most prestigious railways. It is going to be a fantastic occasion for everyone and it will be wonderful to see the flame travelling on the Flying Scotsman from York to Thirsk and between Whitby and Pickering on the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.  Being able to host the Torch over six days will give us a wonderful opportunity to profile and showcase our county to the world.”

4-7 Nov: Whitby Goth Weekend

You don’t have to be a Goth to visit Whitby Goth Weekend – though if you want to make a dramatic impact, it undoubtedly helps.

I visited the Goth weekend for the first time on Sunday. Not as a Goth, I’m afraid, but to take pictures. I’ve long loved Whitby as a seaside resort and fishing port – it’s right up there with the very best in the country as nationwide polls consistently show.  Aside from the marvellous beaches and superb scenery, it’s also full of interesting shops, boutiques, cafés, restaurants and tourist attractions. But it’s also full of interesting people – particularly on one of their themed weekends.

The Whitby Goth Weekend has been going for 17 years. Originally held once a year, it’s now biennial every April and November. On Sunday we were treated to fine weather making it the ideal setting for promenading along the front dressed in one’s finest gothic attire. And that’s exactly what many people did.

It seemed to me that the population was split almost 50:50 – half the people were Goths and the other half were taking photos of them.

Many Goths had clearly gone to a lot of trouble to produce their often intricate outfits. Many of the costumes were simply stunning. And, as an amateur photographer what amazed me the most was how polite everyone was – after I’d stopped them, positioned them for a pose, and then taken several shots, just about every single one of them thanked me.

After an excellent plate of fish and chips in Graveley’s Seafood Restaurant we had to head back home but if we’d been able to stay there would have been plenty of things going on in the bars and bistros in the evening – including live bands.

I’ll certainly be going back to Whitby for Goth Week again – roll on next year.

The War Weekend in the North York Moors, Pickering, Levisham, Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby has been scheduled for 12, 13 and 14 October 2012.

An exceptionally popular event, 2012 will be the 20th year for the North York Moors Railway’s Wartime Weekend as visitors take a nostalgic trip back to 1940s wartime Britain.

Vintage Car Parade, Pickering

Events will include:

  • air raid at Pickering Station
  • 1940s musical shows and music

Commemorating those who served on the Home Front

The 2011 War Weekend drew record crowds to the North York Moors including hundreds of re-enactors from all over the UK and Europe (we spoke to a Polish chap from Stratford and a German re-enactor who’d come over from Düsseldorf for the weekend). And whilst Grosmont, Goathland and Pickering all put on brilliant shows and events, Levisham stole the show this year, tranformed into French Le Visham, a continental rural station under German occupation with a fabulous French café in an atmospheric marquee and a full-size replica flying V1 bomb.

For the 2012 War Weekend, if you’re looking for accommodation for the weekend, check out Pickering B&Bs, Whitby hotels and holiday cottages in the North York Moors on Hello Yorkshire.

Yorkshire: home to the most romantic ruins in the UK

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 by RichFox
UK's most romantic ruin

UK's most romantic ruin

Yorkshire’s famed for many things, and its beautiful Dales and Moors are home to a host of spectacular views.

And now two very special jewels of Yorkshire’s crown have been named the first and second Most Romantic Ruins in the country in a poll in this month’s Countryfile magazine.

Top of the pile is Whitby Abbey, the magnificent gothic ruin overlooking one of the UK’s favourite seaside towns. As the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the remains of Whitby Abbey are perched on a cliff high above Whitby at the top of 199 famous steps.

Founded in 657, the Abbey has a magnificent wealth of history, including being the spot where the method of calculating Easter in the Roman church was devised in 664.

And as if first place in the Top 10 Romantic Ruins wasn’t enough, a Yorkshire ruin also came in second – Fountains Abbey, which fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, and yet as the UK’s largest abbey ruins, it retains a real majesty and ability to awe all who see it.

Lying in the beautiful grounds of the Studley Royal Water Gardens, and with UNESCO World Heritage status, Fountains Abbey is a must-see.

For accommodation in Whitby for Whitby Abbey, or accommodation in Ripon for Fountains Abbey, check out Hello Yorkshire.

28-31 October: Whitby Gothic Weekend (WGW)

Friday, June 25th, 2010 by chrisjones

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Gothic Weekend is held twice a year – in April and October – and attracts visitors from around the globe to what has become since its inception in 1994 the foremost convention of Goths in the calendar.

Whitby is the ideal spot for this event – it’s got long associations with Dracula and its inhabitants are tolerant of people with different tastes in clothing from the mainstream. It’s also a great tourist resort with lots of things to see and do for both Goths and non-Goths.

WGW was started primarily to enable the founder, Jo Hampshire, to meet up with like-minded pen-pals and so put faces to names.  The first weekend, centred on the Elsinore public house, was a huge success and the event rapidly expanded into a range of activities – live music, a “Bizarre Bazaar”, picnics, photoshoots, a football match – and much more.

This October a number of bands have already been confirmed including Wayne Hussey (from The Mission), Manuskript (with special guests), The Stripper Project (featuring Neil Ash & Kyle Whipp from Children on Stun), and The Last Cry, with more to come.

Most of the major events will be held in the Spa Pavilion, but there are many smaller happenings and fringe events held in pubs, clubs and restaurants throughout Whitby. The Elsinore, where it all started in 1994, will again be very much involved.

Tickets are £39.50 for the weekend and can be purchased through the WGW website.

If you haven’t already booked accommodation in Whitby for this event then get in quick! Accommodation gets booked up well in advance. Check out the superb selection of Whitby hotels here on Hello Yorkshire. There are also holiday cottages in Whitby for anyone looking to stay a little longer, as well as some great guest houses and inns offering bed and breakfast in Whitby centre.
