Stokesley Tourist Information

Stokesley became a market town in 1223 when it was granted a charter to hold fairs. One of the town's features is the Mill Wheel, which is thought to be on the site of a mill recorded in the Doomsday Book in Norman times.

Stokesley's High Street, at the heart of the town, runs from College Square to West End and comprises Georgian and Regency houses and a host of independent shops. From the cobbled High Street run a number of snickets (narrow lanes) to a tranquil area by the River Leven, called Levenside and dedicated to the memory of Jane Pace, an inhabitant of Stokesley who was the first white woman to settle in the state of Victoria, Australia. There is a very attractive riverside walk and the Packhorse Bridge over the River Leven dates back to the 17th century.
