Something out of the extraordinary will be happening in the follies at Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal near Ripon, during May to November 2015.
It was very fashionable to have follies in one’s garden In the 18th Century. Garden designers of the day used these rather whimsical buildings or structures to draw attention to a most carefully created vista.
Studley Royal Water Garden is pure Georgian elegance. Classica statues, views and follies were all designed to impress the 18th Century visitor, with the fashionably romantic Abbey ruins, a jewel in the gardens crown. It has changed very little today and it’s what makes this wonderful Estate a World Heritage Site.
Visitors who peer inside the Temple of Piety, Banqueting House and the Octogan Tower will be sure to discover most intriguing installations created by artists inspired by the opulence of the 18th Century and the history of these wonderful gardens.
