My favourite time of year has finally arrived! It’s time for us to dig out our cosiest hat and scarf and prepare our minds and bodies for a flood of festivities, from laughter, Christmas music and Santa hats to mulled wine, mince pies, sweet treats galore and stalls containing interesting food and trinkets from all over Europe and beyond. This is the joy of Christmas markets.
At any other time of year the prospect of shopping would fill me with dread. What with having a mortgage to pay and a husband who’s a student I don’t really get to go out and buy myself many treats, and trawling my home town looking for the essentials is a bore. But Christmas shopping doesn’t have to involve those practical purchases like work shoes, which can consume your day off, and leave you feeling exhausted and utterly unexcited by the item you’ve ended up adding to your collection of stuff you wouldn’t wear, and certainly wouldn’t spend your hard earned cash on, if you didn’t have to.
For me Christmas shopping is about really treating my family and friends – buying them the sorts of things they’d really love to own, but wouldn’t end up buying for themselves because they’re a bit too much of an indulgence. And indulgent items you are sure to find at a Christmas market. Does your Mum really need some hand crafted, beautifully scented bath bombs and moisturiser? I think it’s fair to say she could live without them. But will she really enjoy them? Absolutely! And you just know that your Dad will love the German chocolates you picked up for him. A bounty of gorgeous gifts await at Yorkshire’s many Christmas markets, including jewellery, ceramics, textiles, edibles and drinkables galore! I go to a Christmas market every year, and for me there’s no better way to get me into the festive spirit.
