There are lots of fun things that you can do on your visit to the Scarborough coast. It’s one of the biggest seaside resorts we have here in Yorkshire, and the lovely town should be on your “must visit” list.
Check out some of our favourite things to do in Scarborough when you’ve finished exploring the beach and start planning your visit.
SEA LIFE Sanctuary
No visit to Scarborough is complete without a trip to the SEA LIFE Sanctuary. You can get up close with animals you might never have seen before. Learn all about otters, seals, penguins, turtles, sharks and rays. You can see animals being fed and discover the great work being done by the sanctuary to protect Scarborough’s marine life.
There are some great theatre performances you can treat yourself to all year round in Scarborough theatres. Take a look at what’s on in the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough Open Air Theatre, The Spa, and Scarborough Market Hall during your stay.
Take a visit to Scarborough lighthouse and learn all about its history. If you’re lucky (or unlucky!) you might even catch a glimpse of the old Captain Appleyard. The old harbour-master fell to his death in the harbour in the 1870s and has been lingering around the lighthouse ever since.
Sitting on top of the cliff, overlooking the sea, Scarborough castle is still an impressive site, even if it’s been slightly ruined by time. It’s run by the English Heritage so is free for members and has fantastic views over the town, and interesting exhibit sharing the highlights over 3000 years of history, and a delicious coffee shop to give you the energy for the walk back to town.
North Bay Railway
You’ll get a fantastic day out at the North Bay Railway. You’ll learn about the locomotives, scenery and history of the railway and can enjoy their SkyTrail, water chute, and boating lake. You can also treat yourself to refreshments in the smallest pub in Yorkshire.
Test your nerves in Scarborough’s Terror Tower. The haunted house has 11 different rooms for you to brave, with live actors, special effects and animated scenes. The rooms have been inspired by the most famous and frightening characters from horror movies. Do you think you can handle this terrifying experience?
Between Easter and October, you can take a trip on a Queensferry Cruise and discover Scarborough from the water. You’ll get to see picture perfect views of the coastline and get up close with the seals that live in the bay.
Scarborough Art Gallery
Take in some of Scarborough’s community and cultural heritage through its collection of gorgeous artwork. The gallery was originally a family home built in the 1840s and is full of permanent and visiting exhibitions to inspire you.
Scarborough Lifeboat Station
Learn all about how the Scarborough lifeboat station and the brave people that work there keep everyone safe along their coast.
Alpamare gives you a jam packed day of family fun. They’ve got incredible water slides, a gigantic wave pool, heated garden pool, whirlpools and bubble recliners. And, when you’ve had your fill of fun, you can relax in the warming infinity pool overlooking Scarborough bay.
If you’re looking for old fashioned, arcade fun, pop down to the Olympia. They’ve got traditional arcade games and bowling, as well as an onsite bar.
