Things to do in August

School’s out and you’ve got lots of long days to fill with wonderful Yorkshire activities. Check out our pick of some of the most exciting things you can be getting up to this August and make the most of the summer.

Yorkshire Day

1st August is always our favourite day of the year – Yorkshire Day! All around the county, you’ll find plenty of fun activities to celebrate this fantastic part of the world. This year, the official celebrations are being held in the incredible coastal town of Whitby.

The Medieval Tavern

Head over to Bolton Castle for an evening in candlelight, enjoying ales, pottage, storytelling, and medieval minstrels.

Whale and dolphin watching

At this time of year, you can see whales and dolphins right off the Yorkshire coast. Head over to Bempton Cliffs to take part in their themed activities and get tips for spotting the wildlife as they swim along our coastline.

Whitby Traction Engine Rally

There’s so much happening in Whitby this month, including the fantastic Traction Engine Rally. Come along and see wonderful engines in all their glory, enjoy the bird of prey display, Scarborough Fair Collection, and firework finale.

Family Beach Bootcamp

Get all the family outside and active on Bridlington’s south beach with this fun, free family bootcamps. There will be activities suitable to all ages and abilities and lots of exciting beach games to enjoy.

Hayburn Wyke wander

Find out a little more about this wonderful woodland and have a wander through the trees with the experts who help maintain the area.

Whitby Regatta

This year’s Whitby Regatta looks amazing. There weekend is packed full of entertainment, races on the water and a spectacular firework finale. Make sure you grab your Regatta programme and set out on this year’s treasure hunt around the town.

Ilkley Jazz Festival

Listen to a range of fantastic jazz music by live performers all weekend at the Ilkley Jazz Festival. Ilkley are hosting lots of wonderful events throughout August, so be sure to check their full schedule.

Countryfile Live

Countryfile are coming to Yorkshire! Come along to Castle Howard to see the show’s Northern debut, meet all your Countryfile heroes, and get up close with nature.

Enjoy a tribute to all your favourite bands at Tribfest at Sledmere House. Over 170 bands and acts will be performing for you at the 13th annual festival. You can expect to see tributes to The Stone Roses, Tina Turner, Green Day, The Killers, ABBA, Madness, ACDC, and lots more.

Staithes and Runswick Lifeboat Weekend

Come along and enjoy all the fundraising events during the Staithes and Runswick Bay RLNI lifeboat weekend. It’s going to be action packed and fun for the whole family.

12th Century Knights

Watch as knights battle it out to show their prowess and bring the sounds of history to life at Skipton Castle. Medieval craftsmen will display their work as well, and there’s lots to see and do throughout the weekend to keep the whole family entertained.

Whitby folk festival

This will be a fantastic run of events starting 17th to 23rd August. There are concerts, ceilidhs and dances, workshops, events for children and young people, storytelling, and music sessions. Don’t miss out.

Headland Festival

You can enjoy music, beer and fantastic activities for all the family at Scarborough’s Headland Festival. Handpicked beers are available all weekend to show off the best of British brewing, as well as DJs, bands, solo performers, and acoustic artists.

Marathon Du Malton

Malton are hosting an incredible event for all you food and drink lovers. The Marathon Du Malton is a gourmet food and wineathlon. The 10k course is full of delicious stops along the way for you to sample the finest Yorkshire produce. You don’t have to take part to come and enjoy the event, as there is plenty of fun to be had for non-runners too.

Dog Walk Train

Celebrate National Dog Day in style with a day of exploring the local area with your pooch. Board the Wensleydale Railway and journey into the Dales to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
