Walk along the river
Riverside walks in Knaresborough are absolutely gorgeous. Not matter what the season, you’ll find something beautiful as you wander along the riverside paths and enjoy spending time surrounded by nature. Make sure to look carefully through the trees too, as there are wonderful wooden carvings to be found.
Visit the castle
Knaresborough Castle perches on the very edge of the cliff, where a castle has stood since 1130, although the ruins you can see today date to the 14th century. You can take a tour around the castle ruins and old manor house, learning a little more about the site’s historical significance. If you’re lucky, you might even get to meet the castle ravens!
Explore Mother Shipton’s Cave
Famous prophetess now known as Mother Shipton was born and worked her charms in Knaresborough. Her prophecies wide ranging, predicting aeroplanes, the fall of Henry VIII’s right hand man Cardinal Wolsley, and even the end of the world. You can visit her birthplace, learn more about her skills in prophecy and see the wonder of the petrifying well.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag
Carved by John the Mason in 1408, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag is a medieval site of worship build to honour the Virgin Mary. The tiny chapel has been a site of pilgrimage for worshippers since its creation and remains popular place to visit to this day.
Find St Robert’s Cave
Further along the river than the Chapel, you’ll discover the cave of St Robert. This is a rare site indeed, as it’s an example of a medieval hermitage cut from the limestone rock. You can see remains of a domestic area and small chapel with a grave and alter platform.
Each Wednesday, Knaresborough hosts a market, just as it has done since 1310! By from local, independent businesses during the market and wander the shops along the high street.
Take a boat ride
You can do more than just walk by the river in Knaresborough, you can enjoy a boat ride across it! Hire a rowing boat from one of the companies on the riverbank and test your skills on the water. It’s great fun, and well behaved dogs can even come on board!

Walk though Bebra Gardens
From the castle, you can wind your way down to the river through Bebra Gardens. The steep, winding paths are surrounded by plants and trees, giving you a place to escape into nature. The paths lead to a paddling pool that’s great for children in the summer.
