Take a look at some of our favourite things to do in Pickering.

Visit the North York Moors Railway

People come to Pickering every day because it’s the start of the fantastic North York Moors Railway. This historic railway line is one of the last of its kind, and it is run entirely by Charitable Trusts. The 18 mile railway runs right through the heart of the North York Moors National Park and is truly stunning.

When you visit Pickering, you’re sure to see the steam trains and heritage locomotives coming in and out of the station. It’ll be too hard to resist a trip yourself!

Pickering Castle

The 12th century castle at Pickering is fun for all the family. You can spend the afternoon exploring the ruins, climbing to the top of the tower, and enjoy learning a little more about the history of the area.

Pickering castle is managed by English Heritage so it’s free for members to enter. There is lots of information around, and fun activities for children to enjoy.

Ryedale Folk Museum

Just outside Pickering is the fantastic Ryedale Folk Museum. Step back in time at this open air museum and learn about the interesting history of the area. The museum really brings history to life and the whole family will enjoy the experience.

Walk through time as you explore the exhibits. See the Iron Age round house, learn about farming or become the black smith’s apprentice. Get stuck into craft workshops, wander the Victorian gardens, and even get up close to the farm animals that live on site.

Explore Dalby Forest

You can enjoy a fantastic, adventurous time in Dalby Forest. There’s so much for you to enjoy in the woodland, whether you’re on a Go Ape! adventure, riding through the trees on a mountain bike trail, or walking and wildlife spotting, there’s something to excite your whole group.

Dalby Forest has also been named as a Dark Sky Discovery Site. You can even see the Milky Way from the Dalby Observatories, and there are lots of events hosted here during the Dark Skies Festival.

Beck Isle Museum

The Victorian era is brought to life with a real hands on experience of history in the Beck Isle Museum. Get up close to a printing press that’s over 160 years old and see how the old technology used to work. We love the agricultural heritage section of the museum too, as there’s such a wide variety of historic equipment to enjoy.
