What’s on this December?

North Yorkshire is full of fantastic Christmas activities that you won’t want to miss out on. There are lots of wonderful things happening all over the county, including lots of wonderful Christmas markets and fayres.

Northern Lights Express

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is operating a fantastic Northern Lights Express throughout December. The illuminated journey begins in Pickering and the heritage carriages are covered in thousands of lights. You’ll be amazed at the dazzling light show in Levisham Station and love the journey through the twinkling forest.

Winter landscape in the North York Moors National Park

Winter Challenges at the North York Moors National Park Centre

Burn off come calories in preparation for all the festive feasting with a challenging all-day walk through the National Park. You’ll see some fantastic views over the 10 miles. The event is free with a suggested £2 donation. Dogs are welcome but must stay on their leads.

Yuletide Museum at Night

Visit the Ryedale Folk Museum after hours to see the atmospheric buildings at night. There will be lots of Christmas entertainment and crafts, as well as the chance to meet Santa. You can join in with the carol performances and tuck into wassail punch, mulled wine and mince pies.

Robin Hood’s Bay Victorian Weekend

Step back in time as you wander around the stunning Robin Hood’s Bay. Visitors and residents will be dressed in Victorian attire and enjoying the events hosted by the town; including welly throwing on the beach, RNLI duck race, hand bell ringers and much more. Even Santa will be paying a visit to the town.

Whitby Krampus Run

Come and marvel at the annual coastal spectacle as Whitby town is filled with parading Krampus figures. Folklore tells of Krampus, the fearsome horned creature that helps Saint Nicholas as he visits the world’s children – by punishing those who have been naughty.

Activities take place all day, with the parade at 3pm through the town. Tickets are available for the evening’s entertainments in the Met Ballroom and Lounge too.

Christmas Through Time

Discover how Christmas has been celebrated over from the Iron Age right through to contemporary celebrations at the Ryedale Folk Museum. You can get hands on with crafty activities, meet Santa, and learn about the history of mince pies, advent and the tradition of giving Christmas cards.

Christmas Concert at Malham Cove

Listen to the wonderful music of Skipton Brass while enjoying a mulled wine and mince pie. The festive tunes and awe inspiring setting is guaranteed to get you in the festive mood. Plus, it’s all for free! You only have to pay for your refreshments.

Filey Fishtive Tree Switch On

Head over to Filey for their third year of very special coastal Christmas activities. Their Fishtive tree is getting switched on and there will be lots of family entertainment to help celebrate the season and the town’s fishing heritage.

Santa’s Underwater Wonderland

Come along to SEA LIFE Scarborough to meet Santa in his underwater wonderland. All children will receive a present to open on Christmas day and love their time spent with Santa in this most unusual of locations.

Santa Specials on North Bay Railway

Join in the fantastic celebrations of the festive period in Scarborough with the North Bay Railway Santa Specials. Hop aboard the train and enjoy the magical ride to meet Santa in his grotto at Peasholm. Each child will get an exciting Christmas gift, and there’s a mince pie and festive tipple for the adults.

Lions Boxing Day Dip

Are you brave enough to run right into the North Sea this Boxing Day? Join the Whitby District Lions as they dress up and raise money for local charities with their daring dip into the freezing ocean! Spectators are very welcome, but if you want to join in, make sure you register to ensure you’re covered by their insurance!

Flamborough Fire Festival

Celebrate the New Year in Viking style at Flamborough’s Fire Festival. The events begin at 10:30pm and is free for all in full Viking gear, with a suggested donation of £5pp for those not in costume. You’ll get to see the 2,000 Viking torches, Flamborough fireballs, and the burning of the Viking Longship. It’s not one to be missed!
