Step back in time to a bygone era with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Sit back and enjoy 24 miles of some stunning scenery as your journey winds its way through the North York Moors National Park to the historic seaside town of Whitby*. The Railway is an all-weather attraction which recreates history with every single train ride on board one of the steam or heritage diesel hauled services.

This fabulous heritage railway is a great family day out with period stations, tea rooms, gift shops and car parking along most of the route. Dogs are welcome on board for small charge, and trains can accommodate for wheelchair and pushchairs too.

Along the line you will come across the lovely villages of Grosmont, Goathland, and Levisham. Grosmont is the operating hub of the NYMR where our locomotives are restored and maintained, so if you’re lucky you may get a glimpse behind the scenes!

When you arrive you in Goathland it may look just a bit familiar, and it should – it was transformed into 'Hogsmeade' Station for 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone', as well as part of 'Aidensfield' in the popular 90’s drama 'Heartbeat'.

You can also request a stop at Newton Dale Halt; not accessible by road, this is a calm woodland area that’s perfect for forest walks and wildlife spotting. The bustling town of Pickering is the home of the railway, and from there you can enjoy a variety of other historic attractions as well as good cuppa in one its many tea rooms.

Special events are held throughout the year including Railway in Wartime, Annual Steam Gala, Sixties Fest, Halloween and Santa Special. See www.nymr.co.uk for further information.

Many visitors return to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway again and again, taking in fabulous walks and cycle rides, exploring the wonderful stations, or visiting Pickering and the famous and historic seaside resort of Whitby.

Book an extra special dining experience on one the Pullman Dining Trains or reserve a place enjoy the ride of your life on one of the incredibly popular Footplate Experiences. You can even extend your visit by booking a stay in one of the quirky self-catering accomodations on offer along the route – choose from the Grosmont Station House or Camping Coaches at Levisham and Goathland.
